Google Sign-In and Google Classroom

RootWords offers two features that connect to your Google Account: "Log in with Google" and "Connect Google Classroom" (for teachers). This section explains what Google information we access, how we use it, and how you can remove it.

What we access

Log in with Google (all users). When you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your Google account's unique ID. For teachers and personal accounts, we also receive your name and email address so we can create and recognize your account. For students who sign in through their school using the Student button, we store only Google's anonymous user ID. We do not store those students' names or email addresses.

Connect Google Classroom (teachers only). If a teacher chooses to connect Google Classroom, we ask for two read-only permissions:

  • View your Google Classroom classes (classroom.courses.readonly)

  • View the rosters of your Google Classroom classes (classroom.rosters.readonly)

We use these to show the teacher a list of their classes and to import a class roster into the RootWords Teacher Dashboard. We do not request, read, store, or display student email addresses. We cannot change, create, or delete anything in your Google Classroom. The permissions are read-only.

How we use it

We use Google data only to provide these features inside RootWords: signing you in, listing your classes, and importing a class roster so a teacher can see their own students' practice progress. Each teacher sees only their own classes and students.

We do not use Google data for advertising. We do not sell Google data. We do not use it to build advertising profiles. We do not use it to train generative AI or machine learning models. We do not share it with anyone except the service providers we need to run the app (such as our hosting provider), who may use it only to provide RootWords to you.

How we protect it

Google access tokens that allow RootWords to read your classes are stored encrypted (AES-256-GCM). Student email addresses from Google Classroom are never stored. Our servers use encrypted connections (HTTPS).

How long we keep it, and how to delete it

We keep Google Classroom connection data only while your teacher account is active and connected. You can end the connection at any time by revoking RootWords' access in your Google Account at https://myaccount.google.com/permissions. You can also delete your RootWords account yourself inside the app (menu, My Account, Delete account). Deleting your account permanently removes your practice history and any stored Google connection tokens. If you cannot use the app, email charlotte@rootwords.io and we will delete your account and the Google data connected to it within 30 days of a verified request.

Google API Services User Data Policy

RootWords' use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
